Things to Do in Fairfax, Virginia

Patriot Center

Located on the George Mason University campus, Patriot Center is a dynamic arena for college basketball games and special events. It seats over 10,000, and hosts concerts and family shows.




Smithsonian Museums

The Smithsonian is a complex of 19 galleries and museums in Washington, DC, including the National Zoo. From art and architecture to aerospace and science, the Smithsonian offers visitors diverse cultural activities and learning. The Air & Space Museum has two locations, the main campus and the Udvar-Hazy Center. Washington, DC Monuments and Memorials

From the White House to the Capitol Rotunda, the nation's capital is home to many iconic buildings and landmarks. Most monuments in Washington, DC, are found in the heart of the city, on or near the National Mall, just a 30-minute drive from BEST WESTERN Fairfax. At the center of the National Mall is the Washington Monument, a distinctive obelisk rising into the heavens that pays tribute to the nation's first president. Free tickets are required to explore the interior of the tower, and are available first come-first served. You can reserve them in advance for a $1.50 fee. The Lincoln Memorial is probably one of the most widely recognizable structures in the world, with its 36 Doric columns and seated figure of the 16th president.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the National Mall is another popular destination, centered on a black wall inscribed with the names of those who served and perished in that action. The Martin Luther King, Jr. and Franklin D. Roosevelt memorials are also located nearby on the Potomac River Tidal Basin. Off the National Mall, the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial pays tribute to the 184 lives lost in the attack on the Pentagon in 2001. It's close to the Marine Corps Memorial and the Air Force Memorial.

Arlington National Cemetery

The most famous cemetery in the United States, Arlington National Cemetery is the final resting place for members of the U.S. military, including President John F. Kennedy. Visitors pay respect at his gravesite, where the Eternal Flame burns bright. Funerals do take place here, but it is also open to tourists wishing to visit the Tombs of the Unknown, and the many monuments and memorials. These include Memorial Amphitheater, the Korean War Contemplative Bench, and the Women in Military Service for America. Arlington is a 20-minute drive from our Fairfax hotel.

National Zoo

With a mission of education and conservation, the Smithsonian National Zoological Park is one of Washington, DC's best public treasures. Spend a whole day exploring this family-friendly attraction in a beautiful, peaceful setting. Learn about the planet's wildlife through dynamic exhibits like the Cheetah Conservation Station and the Think Tank, which researches the language and communication systems of highly intelligent, social animals like orangutans and macaques. Visitors can also enjoy delicious dining choices in one of the many restaurants, and take home a special souvenir from the gift shop. Discover Eight Natural Wonders of Virginia

1. LURAY CAVERNS – Luray, Va.
Looking for the ultimate underground experience? Known as “Geology’s Hall of Fame,” Luray Caverns is the largest and one of the most popular caverns in Eastern America.

2. VIRGINIA NATURAL BRIDGE – Natural Bridge, Va.
Formed when a cavern collapsed, legend holds that a young George Washington surveyed the Natural Bridge site for Lord Fairfax.


3. NATURAL TUNNEL STATE PARK – Duffield, Va.
The tunnel, which was naturally carved through a limestone ridge for more than a thousand years, is more than 850 feet long and reaches a height of up to 10 stories. Natural Tunnel offers cave tours and canoe trips on the Clinch River.


4. WESTMORELAND STATE PARK – Montross, Va.
Take in the breathtaking views atop Horse Head Cliffs or stroll along the river’s shore and hunt ancient shark teeth.

5. BURKE’S GARDEN – Tazewell, Va.
Sometimes referred to as "God's Thumbprint" because of its view from the air, this mountain-ringed bowl is 10 miles in diameter and filled with some of the most fertile farmland in the state.

6. BREAKS INTERSTATE PARK – Breaks, Va.
Head west to the state border and you’ll find the “Grand Canyon of the South.” Historic Breaks Interstate Park was discovered in 1767 by Daniel Boone and offers all the beauty you’d expect from the mountainous land, where you can take a tranquil hike or bike ride.

7. GREAT DISMAL SWAMP – Suffolk, Va.
Many tales have been told about the Great Dismal and its mysterious circular lake, a biological wonder few have ever experienced.

8. GREAT FALLS PARK – McLean, Va
Just 15 miles from DC sits one of the most historic natural wonders in the U.S.: Great Falls Park, located on the Potomac River. A unit of the George Washington Memorial Parkway, the park’s origins date back to 10,500 BC.
